In a significant development, U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed the release of Dena Karari, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen detained in Iran since December 2024. Announcing the news on Truth Social, Trump stated that Karari is now “safely outside of Iran, and in good condition.” He described her release as a gesture of goodwill from Iran.
Karari’s lawyer, Jared Genser, also confirmed her safe departure from Iran, noting that she is currently en route back to the United States. He attributed her release to the concerted efforts of the Trump administration in negotiating her freedom.
Karari’s ordeal began in 2024 when she traveled to Iran to visit her family. However, following U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran in 2025, she was accused by Iranian authorities of espionage and subsequently barred from leaving the country.
The release of Karari occurs against a backdrop of escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, highlighting the diplomatic challenges and complexities in U.S.-Iran relations.
