A potential major shift in U.S. nuclear policy, announced via a social media post by Donald Trump, has thrown the world into confusion. The order to “start testing” has unclear implications and has been sharply denied by China.
The core of the confusion is the order’s vagueness. It is not known if “testing” means computational simulations or a physical explosion, which the U.S. has not conducted since 1992.
Trump justified the directive by accusing rivals of secret tests. He claimed in an interview that Russia and China are testing “way underground.”
China’s foreign ministry swiftly refuted this allegation. A spokesperson stated that Beijing is “responsible” and has “abided by its commitment to suspend nuclear testing.”
This ambiguous directive comes shortly after Russia tested a new nuclear-powered cruise missile, further escalating global tensions.
